Camera Movements

Hello. During today’s class, we are learning about camera movements and filmed videos that represent each of the movements we were taught. These are the videos that I took at the library with my friends.

1. This footage is representing a tilt shot, a movement where the camera remains static but goes up and down. I had my friend Kamryn salute to the US flag while I filmed her from down and up. What I tried to capture was her patriotism or love for her home country, the United States of America. The tilt helps make her seem big, making her look empowered and compassionate for the flag.

2. In the footage, I tried to do a dolly shot, which involves the camera physically following a moving object or person. I had my friend Veronica drag Kamryn by her leg while I followed them with the camera. I wanted the video to show as if person being dragged is getting abducted or something, while following them to make the audience feel immersed into the action itself.

3. For this footage, I attempted a pan shot, which the camera remains static (still) but it goes left or right to maybe reveal something or someone. For this video, I had my friend at the beginning act as if she’s trying to look for her friends. Then when I moved my camera to the left, it reveals my other friends getting into a fight, adding some comedic value to the video.

4. This footage contains a zoom, where you would zoom close to something or someone. I had my friend Kamryn read a book while my friend, Niliem, creeps up behind her out of nowhere. I wanted to capture a stalker / suspense vibe from Niliem when she came up behind Kamryn. Then the zoom helps captures Kamryn’s concern reaction to the situation.

5. This footage is a steadicam shot, which the camera remains static, allowing for smooth movement. I had my friend Kamryn pretending as if she’s working on the computer while I held the camera very still. The steadicam and the quiet environment helps create intense focus or determination within the person while they are working on the computer.

6. This footage is a handheld shot, where the person recording is holding the camera itself, giving it some shakiness rather than it being on a mount. I recorded my friend reading a book, while curious about what she was reading. The shakiness from holding the phone makes it as if I’m vlogging or making a small fun video of my friend to create memories.

7. This video is a reverse zoom, which is when the camera zooms, then zooms back out. I had my friend Kamryn lay down on the ground, looking out of it or in her own world. I stood on the stool while zooming out of the floor. The reverse zoom makes her seem small while revealing her empty surroundings, giving some sense of isolation and disconnection between her and the world.
