Representation

Hello! Today, I'll be discussing about the representation of my group's movie opener "Do No Harm."

I think that our opener represents our female main character fairly rather than stereotypically. Typically, men are overrepresented in main, high-medical roles such as doctors, surgeons, etc. It's a common stereotype, but our film doesn't follow that stereotype as we have a female actor as the main character. Nowadays, a lot of women are working in the medical field, but they are usually underrepresented. Our film challenges representation by having our villain protagonist, Dr. Elena, work as a cardiac surgeon. The STEM field is usually pre-dominated by men, so having a female cardiac surgeon, it challenges the idea that a career like a cardiac surgeon is dominated by men only. I do feel like we need to make some edits or changes to improve our character. For example, our villain protagonist, Dr, Elena, does this act without any guilt or morals, making her seem just evil. I should've had make the character act struggled or conflicted when deciding this inhumane act, having her challenge her own morals and medical ethics, giving the film more realism and emotional depth. The lack of struggle makes Dr. Elena seem as she's been doing this for a while, but she hasn't. It's because of circumstances such as her husband dying that she goes through extreme measures, in this case, killing off one of her patients / clients in order to save her husband from dying.
