Movie Rating

Hello! Today in class, we were assigned to pick out a short movie based on our choice. Then we would rate it based on a movie analysis. For my choice, I've decided to choose a short horror film called "Don't Look Away" by Christopher Cox.

Short Movie Rubric

For the first criteria, I thought that the story is reasonably interesting and holds audience attention most of the time. The film shows a story about a girl who comes upon a strange figure in front of her house, and calls her father only for him to say "DON'T LOOK AWAY." It intrigues the audience, wanting to know more about what happens next. I do wish that the dialogue would give more explanation about this strange figure and why it was coming after the family; giving them a 15/20.

Continuing on with the next criteria, the camera work and editing are good. I like how they lowered down the saturation when the girl first saw the figure at her window, giving it a more suspenseful, scary vibe to the situation. As for camera movement, I liked the part where the camera moved all over the place when the siblings were tackling the figure, feeling more immerged into the action. I wished that most of the camera movement weren't mostly static; giving them a 15/20.

Coming down to dialogue and background music, the movie was enhanced by good dialogue and the background music suits the story. The background music they added when the strange man came on screen was eerie-like, making the audience feel unsettled and uneasy. The dialogue they had sounded good, no improper grammar and flowed with the story. I would however that I didn't really enjoy the part where the father said "I'll tell you all about it tomorrow sweetie" as it felt like he cut the flow of the dialogue; giving it a 15/20.

For the last criteria, the performances by the actors were adequate and at times entertaining. I really did enjoy the acting of the girl, her expressions and especially at the moment when she screamed after the strange man attacked her inside the room, making it more thrilling. As for the brother, his acting seemed really dull and not as emotive at the situation. Especially at an intense moment, his acting sounded more casual rather than scared. His face wasn't really that expressive compared to the sister; giving them a 10/20.

Overall, the rating I gave the short film was a 55/80.
