Case Study - Mise en scene

Hello! Today, my class is doing a case study on mise en scene. With this case study, we are supposed to choose a scene from our favorite show and make an analysis using mise en scene. In our analysis, we have to identify the mood that the scene creates, find elements that are used to portray something, and  explain the way the audience would respond to the scene. For my scene, I’ve decided to go with a show called Abbott Elementary.

To start, the setting takes place at an elementary school called Abbot Elementary. From the setting itself, it doesn’t look like they’re in a classroom since there aren’t any children, making the audience assume that the characters are somewhere else rather than a classroom. From that, the audience could probably figure out that they are in the teachers lounge due to the couch and the vending machines. Since they are in a building, there would be a lot of key lighting.

The characters in the scene are wearing formal and modest attire, not only making them look professional but also appropriate for a school setting with kids, giving hints that they are teachers. The IDs hanging on their necks also give an idea of who they are.

For the male teacher, Gregory, he seems to be a new teacher who is serious, maybe a bit rigid by his facial expressions and the way he speaks. He also moves stiffly, which could mean he feels awkward. As for the female teachers, the audience can tell that they are relaxed and experienced from their appearances and also the way they act. From the close proximity of the female teachers and the way they act with one another, the audience could respond to the female characters as close friends.

The female teachers try to teach Gregory how to make learning fun, learning how to engage his students more into his lessons. They showed off an example by singing out a math problem while dancing. Gregory looks really awkward and a bit appalled, making it have a comedic/funny atmosphere to the scene. This allows the audience to feel giddy and joyous.
